Buffalo River: Best in the Ozarks

Springfield News-Leader staff recently named a float trip down the Buffalo River as their favorite summer outdoor activity.

Other favorite rivers, lakes and parks in the region include Roaring River State Park, as well as the Current River east of Springfield Missouri and Table Rock Lake near the AR/MO border.

Dogwood Canyon, south of Branson MO, made the list of favorites - along with Lake of the Ozarks.

But the Buffalo National River is their Number 1 GREAT Vacation Getaway Destination, especially for outdoor photography.

We have to agree! You just can't beat canoeing or rafting down the Bufflo for taking great nature photographs.

Ozark National Forest Off-Road Riding Rules

Off Highway Vehicles (OHVs) are allowed on designated trails and routes within the Ozark National Forest, the St. Francis National Forest and the Ouachita National Forest.

Currently there are ONLY four trail systems specifically designed to accomodate OHVs and ATVs in the Ozark Forrest.

Roads within the Ozark National Forest closed by earthen mounds, gates, signs, or other reasonable barriers are CLOSED to four wheeling traffic.

According to state law, OHVs are generally NOT allowed on county or state roads.

For information on 4-wheeling within the National Forest boundaries, visit http://www.aokforests.com/ and check out the official Off-Highway Vehicle Fact Sheet.

Our guests don't ever have to worry about finding a place to ride atv trails or enjoy their OHVs. Anyone staying at our cabins can 4 wheel all they want to on our PRIVATE trails and roads.

The Arkansas office of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service asks everyone to BE CAREFUL when caving and spelunking in the Buffalo National River Park area.

Wash all gear
Apply disinfectants
Wash AGAIN to remove the disinfectants

Buffalo River Caves Closing

Buffalo National River Park features more than 360 documented caves. In fact, BNR is one of the most cave-rich units of the National Park System.

BNR park superintendent has announced many Buffalo National River caves are now closed to recreational caving until further notice. The cave closings are part of an effort to stop the spread of the fungus thought to cause White Nose Syndrome, which is fatal to bats.

Many caves will REMAIN OPEN to the cavers and spelunkers, including:

Caves in Lost Valley from Eden Falls Cave to the Lost Valley Campground parking area: Eden Falls Cave, Lost Valley Natural Bridge, Cob Cave and Natural Bridge Cave.

Caves along the trail system at Buffalo Point, except for Bat Cave, which is closed: Indian Rockhouse Cave, Indian Rockhouse Sink, Panther Cave, Twenty-Nine and a Half Cave, Forest Trail Pit, Over-look(ed) Cave, Bullet Cave and Sinkhole Icebox.

Near Tyler Bend, Back O' Beyond Cave and Silver Hill Cave are open ONLY for NPS guided interpretive tours.

Buffalo River Elk Herd Viewing

Elk are in our pastures and woods EVERY DAY now!

<img SRC="http://www.buffaloriverlogcabins.net/images/buffalo-river-elk-herdjpg.jpg
" align="center>" alt="Buffalo River Elk Herd seen from Bear Creek Log Cabins office">

Libby took this picture one morning from the front porch. It's blurry, from the zoom lens and the excitement of watching these magnificent animals.
But we wanted to share the fun with all our visitors.

The best time to see the herd together is in the early morning or in the evening. But you can see the big bull elk out in the open most any time of day now. He really likes the peace and quiet here in Bear Creek Valley, just South of the Buffalo River National Park boundary.

<img SRC="http://www.buffaloriverlogcabins.net/images/elk-ferguson-raw4-a.jpg

It's not too late to influence the National Park Service planning process for the Buffalo River National Park.

Call 1-870-365-2700 to receive a postage paid Comment Form and a copy of the BNR General Management Plan Newsletter #1. This will really clarify the planning process for you.

Future Newsletters will be mailed to anyone who requests a comment form.
This will keep you up to date as plans develop.

You can also send any written comments to:
Superintendent
Buffalo National River Headquarters
ATTN: General Management Plan
402 North Walnut
Harrison, AR 72601

The 7 Open House meetings held around the Arkansas Ozark region and in Little Rock were all well attended. Lots of good ideas were presented by friends of the Buffalo River.

The National Park's staff are still asking for more input. Neighbors of the National Park boundaries and local communities are especially encouraged to comment - along with visitors to the Park from all over the USA and around the world.

So, if you were not able to make it to the meetings in Fayetteville/Springdale, Marshall, Jasper, Yellville, Mountain Home or Little Rock, you can still have a voice in what happens to this wild river over the next 20 years.

Comments received before August 31, 2009 will be most helpful.

Monster Small Mouth Bass

Recent rains have stirred up big fish from their lairs along the bottom.

When the water gets a little muddy in the Spring, fishing gets exciting from Woolum to Grinder's Ferry in the middle section of the Buffalo River.

NWAnews.com reports, "the best time to fish the Buffalo (for LARGE smallmouth bass) is when the water is between 7-8 feet at the U.S. 65 bridge."

Bear Creek Log Cabins are just South of this float fishing hot spot where Highway 65 crosses the Buffalo.
